Course Syllabus

Mrs. Lee Ann Daniel

Fall 2023

Course Description

Geometry is the second course in a sequence of three required high school courses designed to ensure career and college readiness. The course represents a discrete study of geometry with correlated statistics applications.

The standards in the three-course high school sequence specify the mathematics that all students should study in order to be college and career ready. Additional mathematics content is provided in fourth credit courses and advanced courses including pre-calculus, calculus, advanced statistics, discrete mathematics, and mathematics of finance courses. High school course content standards are listed by conceptual categories including Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Conceptual categories portray a coherent view of high school mathematics content; a student’s work with functions, for example, crosses a number of traditional course boundaries, potentially up through and including calculus. Standards for Mathematical Practice provide the foundation for instruction and assessment.

Course Outline

  1. Transformations in the Coordinate Plane
  2. Similarity, Congruence, and Proofs
  3. Right Triangle Trigonometry
  4. Circles and Volume
  5. Geometric and Algebraic Connections
  6. Applications of Probability.

Classroom Rules

  1. Bring all needed materials to class.
  2. Upon entering the classroom, have a seat quietly, get out your homework, and start working on the warmup.  Calculators and sharpened pencils should be taken care of at the beginning of class.
  3. You should stay in your seat unless you have permission to do so otherwise.  Be respectful of others!

Grading

Nine Weeks Average

  • 60% of your grade will be derived from summative assessments, such as tests, projects, and vocabulary quizzes.
  • 40% of your grade will be derived from formative assessments, such as homework and daily work

Homework

Homework is kept to a minimum.  Homework is usually required due to absence, or removal from class due to behavior.  Most assignments can be accomplished in the allotted classroom time, or they are adjusted in length according to the students classroom effort.

Tutoring

If you need or want some extra help after school, please come and talk to me. I can schedule you in.

Make-Up Work

It is your responsibility to find out if assignments are made during your absence. You should contact me about missed work at an appropriate time, i.e. not during instruction.

Classroom Materials

  • Notebook binder with paper
  • Pencils and Pens
  • Chrome books must be brought daily as it will be your only access to the desmos calculator.

Class Expectations

  • When the bell rings, all students are expected to be seated and ready to check homework and start on the warmups.  Failure to do this will result in disciplinary action.
  • Working together is acceptable and even encouraged when appropriate.  However, students caught cheating or helping others to cheat will be disciplined according to the academic honesty policy.
  • No food or drink other than water is allowed.
  • Do not take out makeup, hairbrushes, or mirrors during class.  Those are bathroom items not classroom items.
  • Show your work.  Problems that require explanation and/or many steps will require you to show your work to receive full credit.  (Show no work, and receive no credit.)
  • No electronic devices are to be used at any time during class without express teacher permission.  Students who have any electronic device out without permission will be disciplined according to the student code of conduct.
  • All students should go to the restroom during break.  Parent contact will be made should this become a problem.
  • All school policies located in the Pickens High School students’ code of conduct are in effect at all times.
